INTERNET VS. INTRANET VS. EXTRANET

Internet - computer networks joined via gateways that transfer and convert data

Intranet - technology used within a private network (organization, etc.)

Extranet - intranets restricted to certain audiences outside the organization (vendors, etc.)

NETWORK CONNECTIONS

Front-End Networks: connect stations and servers

Back-End Networks: connect peripherals

Backbone Networks:
network other networks connect to;
connects between LANs and WANs;
users not connected direct to Backbone;
connect via access networks (bridge, router, gateway);
optical fiber and micro wave links used

Network Interface Cards (NIC):
circuit boards used to communicate between PC and LAN

WHAT IS A FIREWALL?

Security device to protect internal network from unauthorized access by external network

An application level traffic monitor and access control device

Can detect and log any or all activity over time

WHY HAVE A FIREWALL?

Provides security between LAN and WAN

Provides internal security between LANs

Controls & monitors external access

Prevents unauthorized access to LAN via WAN

Allows transparent LAN access to WAN

WHERE SHOULD A FIREWALL BE PLACED?

Typically, between internet (external network) and internal network
